Scott and Zelda attended many parties at the University Club, 420 Summit Avenue, originally a private club for men with the bar and restaurant open to the public. This brick and concrete structure dates from 1913, Reed and Stem architects. As college students, Scott and a friend raised eyebrows when they lunched at the club with two actresses. On Friday, January 13, in 1922, the young couple engineered "Benedict's Bad Luck Ball." Their one-page tabloid, The Daily Dirge, spoofed the Ordways and other prominent friends. Zelda, even then, was known for her drinking, for smoking cigars and wearing exotic perfume - a departure from more traditional St. Paul ways.
