626 Goodrich is a late Victorian frame house with cupola, tower and porch. Xandra Kalman was responsible for finding this home, a family property, when Scott, Zelda, Scottie and nursemaid had nowhere to go!
Zelda hated the outdated house, hated St. Paul society though Scott had Marie Hersey help her “dress down” for the more conservative northern styles. Zelda hated the weather, “This damn place is 18 degrees below zero!” (Page & Koblas,122) she wrote in a letter to a friend. She hated Scott’s absence as he corrected proofs of the The Beautiful and the Damned in a rented downtown office. That summer the Fitzgerald family moved to the White Bear Yacht Club for golf, sun, relaxation and parties.
