In contrast to the Hersey house, this is the large, sprawling frame Queen Ann style home of the Charles and Mary Ames family. Ames was general manager of the West Publishing Company, a major producer of law books. Even more important than its size and style for Fitzgerald, for Elizabeth and Ted Ames was its large and shadowy backyard and tree house where neighborhood youngsters played. This was the group that attended Professor Baker’s dancing class on Saturday, grew up to act in the plays of their amateur theatrical group, the Elizabethan Dramatic Society and who remained friends throughout their college years. Betty married Norris Jackson, a Princeton classmate of Fitzgerald and the couple remained close to Scott and Zelda throughout their life.
